BASIC TYPES OF CABINET COMPANIES AVAILABLE TO THE CONSUMER

MODULAR CABINETS (Also sometimes referred to as Stock Cabinets)

These cabinets are limited to the standardized dimensions, colors and configurations that the manufacturer offers. This set of fixed choices is referred to as a "Library". They are almost exclusively sold in 3" width increments. For example: If you have a 20 1/2" space, you can use a 18" cabinet and a 3" filler board cut to width to fill the space. These are what you will find at one of the big box retailers (think giant orange or blue signs) or "kitchen cabinet dealers."

READY TO ASSEMBLE (RTA) CABINETS

These are modular cabinets that are shipped/stored flat and assembled prior to installation using quick connect fittings. (think of the office furniture that you can buy at warehouse clubs) They come prefinished and usually have a limited library. Being unassembled allows them to be produced and shipped long distances with low shipping costs. Most of your "kitchen in a day" type companies will assemble these and install them in your space. While there are some American companies producing RTA cabinets, this sector of the industry is dominated by Chinese imports.

SEMI-CUSTOM CABINETS

With semi-custom cabinets the majority of the project is filled in with library cabinet selections, but the manufacturer allows you to make slight adjustments to cabinet dimensions on selected cabinets to complete your design. These modifications involve longer lead times and a substantial premium in cost.

CUSTOM CABINETS

Many cabinet companies that sell their products as "Custom Cabinets" do not actually offer true custom cabinets. Being able to select door styles and finish colors from a library is not custom. Almost all of your cabinetry options offer these choices. True custom cabinets allow you almost unlimited flexibility in choosing configurations, dimensions, wood types, door styles, accessories and finishing. They allow an exact fit to your space, design style and maximize useable space. Being custom built to your specifications they involve a longer lead time as they are built to order.
